内容記述 | Iris Murdoch's The Message to the Planet is particularly worthy of study in order to investigate the role of Jews in her novels. The most important character in it, Marcus Vallar, a former genius in mathematics at Cambridge, is a Jew haunted by the holocaust, and ends up committing suicide just as Primo Levi, an Italian writer and survivor of Auschwitz, did in 1987. In Iris Murdoch : A Life, Peter Conradi notes that it is as if Murdoch predicted Levi's death. When we turn to If This Is a Man by Levi, there are, surprisingly, many passages which remind us of The Message to the Planet. The messages in If This Is a Man are as follows :We should not rely upon charismatic leaders, nor stop thinking for ourselves. Many ordinary people of good will supported Hitler, leading to the slaughter of millions of Jews as a result. The lesson we learn from this is that the same thing can happen again unless we are carefully aware of the existence of evil in ourselves. That is why we must not stop thinking for ourselves. We find similar messages from Murdoch in The Message to the Planet. However, we should not conclude from this that Murdoch was influenced by Levi. Rather, the similarities in their conclusions stem from the fact that both Levi and Murdoch thought deeply and earnestly about how people should and could confront evil and make the world a better place. How small it seems, this paying attention to and seeing others as they are, and doing good acts for others--it remains the case that these small acts are the only way to face down evil and improve the world. In her message to us, Murdoch delineates such a method for improving the world. | |||||
