| 内容記述 | Plant materials of the flower borders in the central garden of Keisen College of Horticulture were observed in late May over 17 years, from 1987 to 2003. All plant materials were intended to bloom for Play Day, the open campus day, which is held every year on the last Saturday of May. The borders consist of two sections : a perennial plant border and an annual plant border. Plant materials in the two borders over the 17 years included 97 genera, 145 species and 254 species and cultivars. 14 plants were used every year for 17 years, 7 were used for 16 years, 5 for 15 years, and 4 for 14 years. The number of plants used in the perennial border each year varied from 38 in 1991 to 56 in 2002. The number used in the annual border ranged from 21 in 1991, 1994, and 1999 to 27 in 1998 and 2002. During planting, plant height, flower and leaf colors, the shape of inflorescences and flowers, and leaf structure were taken in consideration for each plant. Tall plants were usually placed in the back, and short ones in front, but in some cases tall plants were placed in the middle instead to avoid mannerism. Flower colors used were mainly soft tones of blue, purple, pink and white. Vivid color flowers were used in small spaces as accents. To insure a flowering time in late May, several different adjustments of cultivation were use. Hardy annuals and perennials were planted in the border in Novemver, while half-hardies were kept in a cool plastic film house and planted in April. Some other plants, which naturally flower later than the late May, were grown in greenhouse to accelerate flowering and then planted just before Play Day. | |||||
