内容記述 | The global economy has developed in the past two decades, triggered by financial deregulation and accelerated by the information technology. Manufacturing industries of advanced countries began to disperse their factories and branches to the most advantageous locations. Manufacturing companies can design the assortment of their production elements such as location, labour, natural resources and capital under the global strategy. There have been changes in the nature of competition to raise the need for a new paradigm for global business operation. The shipping industry, especially ocean going liner shipping, has global network of routes, agencies and branches from the beginning. In this sense, liner shipping is a pioneer in global management. In the past decade, however, requirements for shipping services such as freight and frequency have become severe and diversified. Liner companies who could respond to the changing needs showed a good performance, and vice versa. Six Japanese liner companies had been reorganized into three in the past decade. No American company exists now ; and English companies with a long tradition had been merged by foreign companies. On the other hand, the volume of ocean going cargos is on the increase and the new comers from Asia are growing. In this paper, I would like to review the dynamic change in overseas transportation under the globalised economy and the efforts of the Japanese shipping industry to reinforce their competitive advantages. Global alliance was without doubt the innovative business model, though it had to be reorganised again and again in a short period of time. | |||||
