内容記述 | This paper is part of an ongoing, monographic investigation of the lives and activities in Japan of the women missionaries of the Reformed Church in America (RCA). It investigates the origins of the Woman's Board of Missions in the RCA, which grew out of the RCA's frustrations with the independence, and financial clout, of the non-denominational Woman's Union Missionary Society, which was led by a woman of the RCA, and was particularly active in Yokohama. The paper also delineates the first missionary project independently undertaken by the Woman's Board, the Centennial Offering of 1876 dedicated to building a girls' school in Nagasaki, and to supporting two teachers for a year at that school. Mary and Elizabeth Farrington, the two women selected for this mission, arrived in Nagasaki in 1878. However, they remained in Japan for less than a year, before returning to America because of ill-health, brought on by what they avowed was inadequate housing. Their difficulties and short stay were deeply discouraging to the Woman's Board, and as a result, relations between the Woman's Board, Synod's Board, and Stout would remain problematical for years. The Farrington's experience was illustrative of many of the difficulties which affected the work of the RCA Woman's Board in Japan: the difficulty in recruiting healthy young women; the unrealistic expectations of many of the middle.class women they did commission as "assistant" missionar- ies; the opposition to educational work for girls at the supposed "cost" to "men's" work, specifically theological training for young men; the strains within mission stations; and lastly, the lack of women with the staying power and tenacity of vision which had motivated the earlier work of the best.known woman missionary of the RCA, Mary E.
